Air Belgium is preparing to launch cargo flights via Ashgabat International Airport with initial services expected to begin in early August, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Belgium reported on Friday.

Preparations for the new cargo operations were discussed during a meeting between Turkmen Ambassador to Belgium Sapar Palvanov and Air Belgium Chief Executive Georges Shashati at the airline’s headquarters. The sides reviewed the recent visit of the Air Belgium chief to Turkmenistan, which resulted in the signing of an agreement to launch cargo air services through Ashgabat International Airport.

Talks focused on the practical and technical aspects of organizing cargo operations, as well as the possibility of holding a symbolic ceremony marking the first flights, scheduled for early August.

Shashati highlighted the logistical and transport significance of Ashgabat International Airport, saying it has the necessary infrastructure to ensure stable, safe and efficient cargo operations, including refueling and technical support capabilities. He also noted the attractiveness of conditions offered by Turkmenistan to international carriers and logistics operators.

Ambassador Palvanov noted Turkmenistan continues to strengthen its role as a stable, secure and cooperative link in the transport corridor between Asia and Europe. He added that the development of aviation logistics is an important part of the country’s broader strategy to expand international transport connectivity and diversify freight routes.

The sides expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in cooperation and reaffirmed their mutual interest in implementing the agreements reached.
