Turkmen President, US Climate Envoy Discuss Environmental Issues

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov held a phone talk with the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry on Monday and discussed topical environmental issues, the official Turkmen media reports.

The sides also exchanged views on the key aspects of this matter, based on the position of Turkmenistan and the US with regard to measures to consolidate the efforts of the international community to combat climate change. In this regard, the Head of Turkmenistan expressed the country’s vision for addressing global environmental challenges and protecting the environment from the negative impact of human factors associated with intensive industrial development.

Turkmenistan and the US confirmed their interest in expanding constructive cooperation that meets the mutual interests and aims of common well-being.

According to the report, at the initiative of the Turkmen side it is also planned to open a Regional Climate Technology Center for Central Asia in Ashgabat under the auspices of the UN. The Center is designed to become an effective platform for effective partnership in the field of adaptation to climate change and mitigation of its effects.

At the end of the meeting, of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate expressed confidence that the constructive interstate cooperation will continue to develop successfully.

At the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Turkmenistan welcomed the new initiative on the Global Methane Pledge (GMP), expressing interest in studying it in detail and considering joining the Pledge.
