Turkmenistan Reiterates Its Commitment to Reducing Methane Emissions

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov emphasized Turkmenistan's focus on decreasing methane emissions during his speech at the international conference titled "Turkmenistan's Independence: Experience and Prospects for Development of International Cooperation," which took place in Ashgabat on Friday, CentralAsia.news reports.

The Vice-Premier reiterated the country's strong commitment to implementing the Roadmap for International Cooperation on Reducing Methane Emissions, which was approved by the President of Turkmenistan.

The Foreign Minister additionally provided information about Turkmenistan's process of joining the Global Commitment in this area.

During the UN COP26 summit in Glasgow in November 2021, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, who was the Vice-Premier at the time, announced Turkmenistan's dedication to addressing environmental concerns, particularly in reducing methane and associated gas emissions during the development of oil and gas fields. He stated that Turkmenistan aims to achieve zero growth in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to substantially reduce emissions on an annual basis in the long term, using its own financial resources and receiving technical and financial assistance from international organizations.
