The International Scientific and Practical Conference, "Sustainable Transport: Contribution to Sustainable Development", on the occasion of the first-ever World Sustainable Transport Day, was held in Ashgabat on Sunday, the Turkmen official media reports.
The forum, which was held in a hybrid format in the Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) agency, gathered heads and specialists of domestic organisations and agencies, representatives of the UNDP Office in Turkmenistan, authoritative international, regional and sub-regional transport structures and major companies working in the field of transport.
The exhibition featured booths from various agencies, including Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways), Türkmendeňizderýaýollary (Turkmen Maritime and River Transport), Türkmenhowaýollary (Turkmenistan Airlines), Türkmenawtoulaglary (Turkmen automobiles), and the newspaper Türkmeniň ýüpek ýoly (Turkmen Silk Road) demonstrating the development of adequate transport infrastructure intended to meet the demand for freight and passenger transport, as well as the competitiveness of transport works and services of domestic carriers in the domestic and foreign markets.
Furthermore, Serdar Berdimuhamedov delivered a welcoming message to the forum participants and emphasised the significance of modernising Turkmenistan's transport and communication system. He also highlighted the importance of expanding mutually beneficial international cooperation.
According to the report, the forum aims to share knowledge, experience, innovative approaches and solutions for the development of transport and logistics, ensuring their sustainability and stability, identifying new opportunities to use digital technologies to improve the maintenance of transport infrastructure, expanding international support in the field of transport and strengthening cooperation.
The forum participants highlighted Turkmenistan's active position in increasing the region's transit traffic volume. They were unanimous in their opinion about the excellent prospects associated with radical reconstruction and development of its transport networks and further deepening of constructive international cooperation.
During the 70th plenary meeting of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly on May 16, 2023, on the initiative of Turkmenistan, a resolution was unanimously adopted by the Member States of the United Nations. This resolution declared November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day.
