Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov announced the country's participation in the Global Methane Pledge during his speech at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai on Friday, the Turkmen official media reports.
During his speech, the Head of State highlighted Turkmenistan's endorsement of the new Global Methane Pledge initiative during the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Glasgow. Serdar Berdimuhamedov also expressed interest in a comprehensive study of the document and involvement in its implementation.
"Today, from this high tribune, Turkmenistan officially declares its accession to the Global Methane Pledge", President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised in his speech.
The head of state also emphasised that Turkmenistan will continue collaborating with international organisations and partner states, working within the existing projects and program. These initiatives aim to facilitate the practical implementation of the conditions outlined in the Global Methane Pledge.
The Global Methane Pledge is an initiative in which participants agree to reduce global methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to 2020 emissions levels. Methane, the second most abundant greenhouse gas, retains 80 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
