President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov met with Jean Todt, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Road Safety, on Wednesday in Ashgabat during the international conference titled International Transport and Transit Corridors: Interconnection and Development – 2024, as reported by the official media of Turkmenistan.
Jean Todt conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and praised Turkmenistan's cooperation with the UN. He reflected on his previous visits to the country in 2013 and 2016, emphasizing the importance of events focused on sustainable transport.
President Berdimuhamedov thanked Todt for participating in the forum and noted that the conference provides unique opportunities to discuss partnership prospects with the UN in road safety. He highlighted Turkmenistan's ongoing efforts to improve transport infrastructure and legislation.
Special attention focused on Turkmenistan's initiative to declare November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day. The parties discussed major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Ashgabat–Turkmenabat highway, as well as the activities of the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport.
The discussion also included the development of motorsport in the country. The President of Turkmenistan emphasized that efforts are underway to enhance the skills of athletes.
Both sides expressed confidence in further strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in road safety and exchanged best wishes at the conclusion of the meeting.
