Turkmenistan Continues Preparation for WTO Membership
Training seminar for Turkmenistan's preparation for WTO accession, November 20-22, 2024, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan organized a training seminar from November 20 to 22 as part of the country's preparation for joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). The seminar aimed to study market access conditions in the context of the accession process, as reported by the seminar organizer.

Supported by development partners, including the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which made a significant contribution to the event's preparation, the seminar welcomed U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan Elizabeth Rood on its first day. She emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two countries in Turkmenistan's WTO accession process.

One of the key speakers was international expert Alejandro Gamboa-Alder from Colombia, who shared his experience at the WTO headquarters. He provided detailed insights into the structure and functioning of the organization, discussing key aspects of tariff policy and trade concession negotiation procedures, including an overview of the General Agreements on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

The seminar featured an interactive format with active discussions, allowing participants to receive valuable recommendations on negotiation strategies with WTO member states and resolving disputes related to tariff and non-tariff barriers. These activities contribute to a deeper understanding of the WTO system and prepare Turkmenistan for full membership in the organization.
