In Ashgabat, officials lit up the lights on the Main New Year’s Tree, marking the upcoming arrival of the New Year, the country’s most anticipated and beloved holiday, as reported by Turkmenistan's official media on Sunday.
The annual lighting ceremony, accompanied by theatrical performances and concerts, took place in front of the Älem Cultural and Entertainment Center. Thousands of residents and visitors, including children, performers, dance groups, and characters from Turkmen fairy tales, gathered to celebrate.
The green tree stands 44 meters tall, adorned with garlands, crystal snowflakes, and an eight-pointed star featuring the numbers 2025, symbolizing the festive spirit and hope for the new year.
A magical atmosphere filled the square as Aýaz Baba and Garpamyk, along with other beloved characters, began their festive journey from the foothills of the Kopetdag, heading to Ashgabat through the city’s iconic locations, including the new Arkaç shopping and entertainment center. Guests enjoyed performances from a puppet theater, while young dancers delighted the audience with vibrant numbers.
The highlight of the celebration was the lighting of the city’s main tree and all the New Year’s trees set up across the regions. Performances by theater troupes, children’s choirs, and popular artists wrapped up the first day of New Year festivities.
Young participants of the event received gifts on behalf of President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov. These surprises became part of a grand celebration that highlights the care for the younger generation, for whom new schools, recreational centers, and sports facilities are being established.
The first celebration at the capital’s Main Tree concluded with a large concert featuring a children’s choir and popular singers performing cheerful songs dedicated to welcoming the New Year.
