The ‘Keel Laying’ ceremony for the first ship built in Turkmenistan took place on Monday at the Open Joint Stock Company ‘Balkan Shipbuilding and Repair Plant’ in the Balkan velayat, the plant's press service reports.

The ceremony was attended by the leaders of the ‘Balkan Shipbuilding and Repair Plant’ and the president of the South Korean company ‘Koryo Shipbuilding Industry Technology Co., Ltd.,’ Choi Yong-uk.

This collaboration focuses on the joint construction of two bulk carriers with a capacity of 6,100 tons, reflecting Turkmenistan's commitment to improving its transportation system.

The project began after President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed an agreement on September 13, 2023, as part of the implementation of Decree No. 680 aimed at enhancing the country's transport infrastructure.

Construction of the first ships began in August 2024, and significant progress was noted on November 11, 2024, when the first blocks were delivered to the construction platform.
