The Turkmenistan ambassador to Belgium, Sapar Palvanov, met Friday with Lucy Shestakova, head of the cabinet of the European Union commissioner for international cooperation and partnerships, according to a statement from the Turkmenistan Embassy in Belgium.
The two discussed strengthening collaboration between Turkmenistan and the EU, particularly in the transport sector.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized Central Asia’s strategic importance as a vital region at the crossroads of two continents and highlighted the need for improved transport connectivity.
They also discussed the potential visit of the newly appointed EU commissioner for international partnerships, Josef Sikela, to Turkmenistan, where transport issues are expected to be a central focus.
The transport sector remains a key area of EU-Central Asia cooperation, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and promoting sustainable economic growth in 2025.
Turkmenistan launched a coordination platform for transport issues between the EU and Central Asia in October 2024. The platform serves as the first and only mechanism for coordinating transport projects between the regions, promoting integration and the development of sustainable infrastructure.
