National leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a phone conversation on Monday with the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, during which they discussed the implementation of the road project from the border with Iran to the city of Gumdag.

The parties noted the significance of this transport corridor and agreed to instruct the relevant agencies to expedite its construction, as reported by official media of Turkmenistan.

The development of transport and logistics infrastructure remains an important area of partnership between the two countries. Given the strategic location of Turkmenistan and Iran, the new road will strengthen connections between Asia and Europe and create additional opportunities for transit between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf.

Additionally, the sides discussed water resource issues, Caspian cooperation, and the upcoming third Caspian Economic Forum, scheduled for February 17–18, 2025, in Tehran. Turkmenistan confirmed its participation at a high level, emphasizing the importance of dialogue on economic, environmental, and humanitarian issues in the region.

The State Agency for Management of Highway Construction of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development of the Islamic Republic of Iran signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on November 18, 2023, in Ashgabat for the construction of the road Gumdag-Etrek-Iran Border.
