Turkmenistan and WTO Discuss Country’s Accession Process

Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Hojamyrat Geldimyradov, during his visit to Geneva for the 71st session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on April 9, 2025, met with the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The meeting focused on Turkmenistan’s progress toward WTO membership and explored potential areas for further cooperation between the two parties.

The sides also reviewed the current state of cooperation and exchanged views on prospects for further collaboration, according to Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The WTO Director-General positively assessed Ashgabat’s efforts in this regard and emphasized the high level of professionalism demonstrated in its accession preparations.

Both parties expressed a mutual commitment to deepening dialogue and enhancing collaboration within the framework of the multilateral trading system.

Established in 1995, the WTO serves as a global international body governing trade relations among nations. It provides a platform for negotiating trade agreements, aims to reduce tariffs and eliminate trade barriers, and facilitates the resolution of trade disputes among its 164 member countries.
