Lee Jae-myung, the Liberal Democratic Party candidate, officially assumed office as president of South Korea after his five-year term was certified by the National Election Commission, as reported by Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday.
Lee succeeds Lee Ju-ho as the country’s head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
In the snap election, Lee Jae-myung won 49.42% of the vote, defeating conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo, who received 41.15%.
The snap election was held following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
