President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov signed a decree pardoning 231 convicted citizens on the occasion of the International Day of Neutrality during an expanded Cabinet of Ministers meeting on Saturday, state media reported.

The president said Turkmenistan traditionally carries out acts of pardon for convicted individuals who acknowledge their guilt and show sincere remorse. Such humanitarian initiatives are regularly implemented to release individuals from further serving their sentences.

The Secretary of the State Security Council, Minister of Defence Begench Gundogdiyev reported on the work of the commission that prepares proposals on citizenship and pardons under the president. The commission chair, together with heads of law enforcement agencies, was instructed to take the necessary steps to ensure that those pardoned return to their families.

The president wished the pardoned citizens honest work, service to the country and a peaceful life.

The meeting also reviewed key issues of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy as a neutral state on the international stage.
