Italian designer Valentino Garavani, founder of the Valentino fashion house and one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, has died at the age of 93.

The designer passed away peacefully at his Rome residence, surrounded by close family, the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation said Tuesday.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences, calling Garavani a symbol of Italian elegance and noting that his creative legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

Garavani was a key figure in global fashion. In 1960, he co-founded the Valentino house and for decades was counted among the most recognized masters of haute couture alongside Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld.

He designed outfits for royalty and world-renowned celebrities, including Jacqueline Kennedy, Princess Diana, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn.
