Ojar Aziya has proposed a major investment infrastructure project to build the Sarahs–Mary–Serhetabat (SMS) highway, aimed at further developing Turkmenistan’s transit and logistics potential.

The planned highway will span about 450 kilometers across Ahal and Mary provinces and include roughly 35 kilometers of connecting access roads. The route is expected to link the international transport corridors North-South, Lapis-Lazuli, and East-West, creating an integrated multimodal corridor through Turkmenistan.

The highway is designed to facilitate efficient transport between Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, and European markets, with connections to the country’s rail, port, and border infrastructure.

The project is proposed on an investment basis and will not use state budget funds. Operations will be commercial, with tolls and service fees paid by private companies, logistics operators, and freight carriers using the route.

Project implementation is expected to generate a multiplier effect in the region by boosting logistics centers, transport and service infrastructure, small and medium-sized businesses, and creating new jobs. Additional economic benefits are anticipated from increased transit flows, expanded trade links, and higher business activity. The highway will serve both cargo and passenger traffic and is considered a key step in developing Turkmenistan’s transit potential.
