Afghanistan has begun work on a regional circular railway network project that will connect the country with Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Pakistan, Minister of Industry and Commerce Nooruddin Azizi said, Ehtebar reported Monday.

The initiative aims to address gaps in the region’s transport infrastructure and create a unified transit space between Central and South Asia, the minister said. The project предусматривает establishing direct railway links with neighboring countries and integrating existing routes.

Azizi noted that the future network will build on existing railway lines connecting four Afghan ports with routes to Central Asia and Iran. Completion of the circular corridor is expected to improve logistics efficiency and expand trade flows.

Specific timelines, financing sources and technical parameters have not been disclosed. Authorities are continuing consultations with regional partners on planning and implementation.

The project is being considered as part of a broader strategy to develop Afghanistan’s transit potential and strengthen its role in regional trade through infrastructure modernization.
