President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov has signed a decree awarding 15 carpet weavers the honorary title of “Türkmenistanyň at gazanan halyçysy” (“Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”) for their contributions to the development of national carpet art and the promotion of the beauty and elegance of Turkmen carpets worldwide, Turkmen state media reported Sunday.

The Turkmen Carpet Day is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May. The occasion is dedicated to the centuries-old tradition of carpet weaving, the work of master weavers, and efforts to preserve national heritage. The Turkmen carpet is regarded as an important element of national identity, reflecting the history, culture, and spiritual values of the people.

As part of the celebrations in Ashgabat, a carpet and carpet products exhibition was held, along with the XXVI meeting of the World Association of Turkmen Carpet Connoisseurs. The events highlighted the role of Turkmen carpet art in national heritage and ongoing efforts to further develop the craft.

The exhibition featured a wide range of carpets and handmade products created by artisans of the State Association “Türkmenhaly” and private workshops. Among the exhibits were traditional carpets with classical guls, as well as items in various shapes and decorative designs, including new artistic works recreated based on reproductions of ancient Turkmen textiles.

During the celebrations, the State Association “Türkmenhaly” was awarded a special certificate by the International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) for its contribution to the development of carpet weaving in the Turkic world. Letters of appreciation were also presented to leading craftswomen in the sector. TÜRKSOY Secretary-General Sultan Raev noted that Turkmen carpet art represents a valuable part of the shared cultural heritage of the Turkic peoples.
