President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev discussed the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation during talks in Baku, Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Monday.

The talks at the Zagulba Palace were held first in a one-on-one format and later expanded to include official delegations from both countries. The sides discussed the further development of traditional Turkmen-Azerbaijani relations, as well as key issues on the regional and international agenda of mutual interest.

Special attention was paid to strengthening cooperation in political and diplomatic areas, including engagement within international and regional organizations, expanding dialogue on sustainable development issues and effectively utilizing capabilities in priority sectors such as energy, transport and environmental protection.

Noting progress in trade and economic relations, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov stressed the need to increase mutual trade turnover and intensify the work of the intergovernmental Turkmen-Azerbaijani commission on economic cooperation. He also put forward proposals to expand cooperation in transport, energy, agriculture and water management, culture, education and science, sports, and healthcare.

Following the talks, the two countries signed a number of agreements and memorandums of understanding covering areas including energy, the economy, industry, agriculture, healthcare, sports, labor and social protection, customs affairs and diplomatic cooperation.
