The Embassy of Turkmenistan in the United States, jointly with the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations, organized a series of cultural and sports events in Washington on July 17–18 to mark the 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s Independence and the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence. The centerpiece of the program was the roundtable discussion "Turkmenistan-U.S. Partnership: Celebrating Independence, Friendship and a Shared Future" held on July 17. Participants included Turkmen Ambassador to the United States Esen Aydogdyev, Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vepa Hajiyev, Acting U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Mark Cameron and former U.S. Ambassador to Turkmenistan Matthew Klimow. Participants highlighted the positive momentum in bilateral relations and opportunities to expand cooperation.
The program also featured an exhibition of Turkmen decorative and applied arts, national clothing, books and printed publications, as well as a friendly chess tournament and a football match.
The chess tournament brought together representatives of the diplomatic and academic communities, members of the Turkmen diaspora and friends of Turkmenistan. Winners received medals, certificates and commemorative gifts, while participants in the football match were presented with commemorative souvenirs.
