Turkmenistan’s State Customs Service and Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee have launched data exchange through the electronic-TIR (e-TIR) digital system for international transit road freight transportation via the Caspian Sea, the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan reported on Saturday.
According to the report, a pilot data exchange was successfully carried out under the organization of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) for road freight shipments transiting from Azerbaijan through Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan, as well as from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
According to the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan, the project is one of the first initiatives for data exchange on transit road freight transportation between the customs authorities of the two countries located along the international transport corridor connecting Europe and Central Asia. The e-TIR system enables real-time electronic data exchange, reduces paper-based procedures, speeds up customs operations and lowers costs.
The e-TIR system was implemented within the framework of the project “Enhancing Regional Connectivity and Creating Smart Customs through Digitalization of Customs Operations.” The system also increases the attractiveness of Turkmenistan’s transit transport corridors for international freight transportation.
