A delegation from Turkmenistan's Ministry of Communications took part in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Digital Corridor Consultative Meeting held in Islamabad on July 29–30, where it presented the country's ongoing efforts to modernize the telecommunications sector and introduce advanced digital technologies, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Pakistan reported on Thursday.
The meeting brought together Pakistan's Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Country director of the Asian Development Bank's Pakistan Resident Mission Emma Fan, as well as delegations from nine CAREC member countries, representatives of government agencies, telecommunications operators, regulatory authorities, international organizations, development partners and technical experts.
Participants discussed the preliminary findings of the CAREC Digital Corridor feasibility study. They also exchanged views on cross-border digital infrastructure, data centers, regulatory cooperation, cybersecurity and investment priorities.
The Turkmen delegation underscored the importance of developing a modern and integrated digital ecosystem within CAREC to promote sustainable economic growth, expand cross-border digital services and deepen regional integration. The Turkmen side also reaffirmed the country's commitment to implementing joint initiatives aimed at strengthening regional economic cooperation, advancing digital transformation and enhancing digital connectivity across the CAREC region.
According to CAREC, participating countries agreed to submit comments on the draft feasibility study for the CAREC Digital Corridor in the coming weeks. The revised report is expected to be presented at the 25th CAREC Ministerial Conference in September 2026.
The CAREC program, supported by the Asian Development Bank, promotes cooperation in transport, trade, energy and digital connectivity among Central Asian countries and neighboring states. The Digital Corridor initiative aims to strengthen regional digital connectivity, facilitate data exchange and promote the development of digital services across the region.
