Port control specialists from Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan took part in a joint training session on information exchange in maritime transport August 11-13 at the Turkmenbashi and Alat ports, Turkmenistan’s State Customs Service reported Thursday.
The event was organized by the Central Asia Regional Office of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, or UNODC, together with the World Customs Organization, or WCO, under the Global Passenger and Cargo Control Programme.
The training, led by WCO experts, began August 11 in Turkmenistan, continued aboard a vessel during the crossing of the Caspian Sea and concluded August 13 at Azerbaijan’s Alat port.
During practical sessions, participants practiced analyzing commercial and shipping documents and conducting customs inspections of cargo and vehicles.
According to organizers, the training aimed to support international freight traffic on the Caspian Sea, prevent the illicit movement of goods and minimize related risks, while improving specialists’ skills and strengthening direct cooperation between the Turkmenbashi and Alat port complexes.
