The United Nations team in Turkmenistan has become the first in the world to begin piloting the G-PESTLE strategic foresight method developed by the UN Women team. The new method was introduced during a capacity-building workshop held in Ashgabat, Turkmen state media reported.
The G-PESTLE approach enables decision-makers to comprehensively analyze interconnected political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors. The method also helps identify risks and opportunities in a timely manner for long-term planning.
The practical experience gained in Turkmenistan in applying strategic foresight and systems-thinking approaches in areas such as energy transformation, water resources and food security is expected to serve as a basis for developing versatile tools that could be used across the United Nations system in the future.
The significance of the G-PESTLE initiative extends beyond the workshop. As part of the next update of the UN Common Country Analysis for Turkmenistan, a special practical checklist based on the method is planned to be developed and tested.
The project demonstrates opportunities to further align Turkmenistan’s efforts in prevention, long-term planning and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, while piloting innovative initiatives in the country and strengthening effective international cooperation.
