Turkmenistan has proposed developing, under the auspices of the United Nations, an international code on the peaceful use of artificial intelligence in international relations and diplomacy, the United Nations reported, citing remarks by Vepa Hajiyev, Turkmenistan’s permanent representative to the U.N., during the general debate of the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly.

According to Hajiyev, artificial intelligence offers broad opportunities but requires responsible international regulation. In this regard, Turkmenistan also proposed holding an international expert dialogue in Ashgabat on digital trust and the responsible use of AI.

In the area of international security, Turkmenistan plans to initiate, under U.N. auspices, intergovernmental consultations on developing a Global Strategy for Peace based on the principles of peace, security and preventive diplomacy. As a next step, the country proposed proclaiming a Decade of Dialogue and Preventive Diplomacy, as well as establishing a Group of Friends of Multilateral Cooperation and Sovereign Equality of States at the U.N.

Turkmenistan also proposed establishing the Ashgabat Climate Dialogue as a platform for regular political and expert engagement and the implementation of practical climate initiatives. Hajiyev said particular attention should be paid to strengthening the climate resilience of regions affected by drought and water scarcity.
