The second international conference “Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals” began work Oct. 7 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone. The event is dedicated to improving the health care system, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and exchanging experience on the latest advances in medical science and practice, according to the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The conference is being held in the format of a general session and thematic sessions. At the plenary session, Turkmenistan’s Minister of Health and Medical Industry Myratberdy Gayypov delivered opening remarks and chaired the session. Chairwoman of the Federation Council of Russia’s Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan Dunyagozel Gulmanova, Acting Director of the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Europe Corinne Capuano, CIS Deputy Secretary General Denis Trefilov and representatives of several international organizations spoke at the plenary session.
In her remarks, Chairwoman of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan Dunyagozel Gulmanova noted that care for people and their health is one of the priorities of the country’s state policy. She said Turkmenistan is carrying out extensive work to protect public health, prevent diseases and develop the health care and pharmaceutical industries.

During the plenary session, it was noted that under the Saglyk State Program, the material, technical and legal foundations of the health care system are being improved, while modern medical facilities are being built and commissioned across the country. Attention was also drawn to such tasks as digitalizing health care, developing telemedicine, introducing artificial intelligence and improving the legal framework for protecting motherhood and childhood.
According to the report, Turkmenistan is developing cooperation with the United Nations, the World Health Organization and the U.N. Children’s Fund as part of its health policy. It was also emphasized that the National Strategy for the Development of Scientific and Medical Diplomacy in Turkmenistan for 2026–2052 is aimed at developing medical science, expanding international cooperation and coordinating global efforts.
Participants exchanged views on important issues related to improving the health care system, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and strengthening international cooperation. They also discussed the industry’s tasks related to modernizing the legal framework of modern medicine.
