Top Russian Diplomat Stresses Significance of the Caspian Issue

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov pointed out the significance of the Caspian issue following the talks with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat on Wednesday. 

The President of Turkmenistan and the Russian Foreign Minister exchanged views on international issues relating to peace, security and sustainable development and discussed the pace of implementation of the agreements reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to Turkmenistan in October 2017.

The President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov expressed his satisfaction that gas issues in Turkmen – Russian dialog is being considered with the aim of reaching new, large-scale and long-term agreements.

The importance of cooperation in science, culture and art was also highlighted during the meeting.

After the meeting with the President of Turkmenistan, Russian Foreign Minister told journalists that Turkmenistan will host an economic forum of the Caspian countries in August for the first time in history and expressed Moscow’s support for Turkmenistan’s plans to intensify cooperation among Caspian countries following the historical agreement on the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea signed in 2018.

“The Strategic Partnership Agreement signed between Turkmenistan and the Russian Federation, which is currently in force, creates basis for all our plans and programs in various areas starting from economy to education, from the dialog on regional security to the Caspian issue which, of course, has a special place,” Lavrov said.

He added that the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov paid special attention to the Caspian issue during the talks.

Lavrov highly rated Turkmenistan’s approach that helped to resolve many of the important issues on the Caspian Sea.

During his working visit to Ashgabat, the top Russian diplomat Sergey Lavrov also held talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan where the heads of the foreign policy agencies of the two countries discussed cooperation in cultural, humanitarian, political, and trade-economic spheres.

Lavrov also gave a lecture at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan before ending his visit to Ashgabat.
