A summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Contact Group in response to COVID-19 was held in a video conference format on Monday.
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov also attended the online summit.
The summit focused on the consolidation of common efforts in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, which has become a new, extremely serious challenge for the entire world community.
The summit was held on the initiative of President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Chairman of the NAM Ilham Aliyev and gathered over 40 heads of state and prime ministers, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the 74th President of the United Nations General Assembly Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, the EU Commission Vice-President Josep Borrell.
The summit ended with the adoption of a declaration in which the member countries expressed full support to the UN chief's plans and initiatives to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
Established in 1961, the NAM comprises 120 countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
