Turkmenistan aims to harvest 155.4 thousand tons of potatoes from 11,100 hectares and 95 thousand tons of onions from 3,800 hectares this year, Neytralnyi Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Thursday.
Considering that the arid climate is not comfortable enough for the cultivation of these two crops, the state allocates additional areas for their production each year, According to the report. This year, the state allocated additional 2,500 hectares for their cultivation.
According to the Food Industry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, part of the harvest goes immediately to retail, and the other part goes to facilities of several ministries and sectoral departments funded by the state. The surplus is stored in refrigerated warehouses.
The vegetable warehouses are mostly filled in October with the harvesting of carrots and cabbage, the report said.
According to the newspaper, the ministry operates ten storage facilities. In recent years, large new storage facilities have been built in the country’s Lebap, Dashoguz and Mary velayats for the storage of three thousand tons of vegetables and gourds and in Ahal velayat for the storage of two thousand tons of fruits and vegetables.
The harvesting of potatoes and onions will continue until mid-July.
