The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on Tuesday hosted an international conference titled "Turkmenistan and the United Nations: Cooperation in the Interests of Peace and Trust" dedicated to the 29th anniversary of the country’s UN membership.

The event gathered heads and representatives of ministries and departments of the country, heads of diplomatic missions and international organizations operating in Turkmenistan, rectors of higher educational institutions, and media representatives. Heads and representatives of UN specialized agencies also participated in the event via video link, Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

During the conference, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Head of Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia Natalia Gherman read out the Message of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the conference participants.

In his message, the UN Secretary-General Guterres said he is “pleased to congratulate Turkmenistan on the 29th anniversary of the country’s membership to the United Nations. Turkmenistan is a valued Member State, and plays a proactive and constructive role in furthering the goals of the Organization, including through driving regional and international cooperation and promoting preventive diplomacy.”

The Secretary-General also underlined that “Turkmenistan’s status of permanent neutrality, its continued hosting of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, and its many initiatives at the UN General Assembly, including the General Assembly resolution declaring 2021 as the International year of peace and trust, are all valuable contributions to our common search for peace, security and prosperity. I thank Turkmenistan for its continued efforts and convey my congratulations on this anniversary.”
