Turkmen President Hails Gas Swap Agreement in Call With Raisi

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on a Monday phone call with his Iranian counterpart Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi highlighted the significance of the gas swap agreement between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan via Iran and called for the establishment of a joint cooperation commission between the three countries in this field.

Berdimuhamedov also emphasized the importance of cooperation among the neighboring states, calling for more enhanced cooperation between the two countries in the international organizations, according to the statement issued on the Iranian President’s official website.

For his part, Raisi thanked his Turkmen counterpart for hosting the recent Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit, saying positive have been taken between Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran on cooperation in the gas sector, including gas swap.

The Turkmen and Iranian Presidents also stressed the necessity of increasing economic and trade cooperation in order to boost bilateral relations.

The tripartite gas swap agreement was signed on November 28 in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat on the sidelines of the 15th ECO Summit. Under the agreement, up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas will be annually transported from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iran.
