The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Serdar Berdimuhamedov won the presidential elections in Turkmenistan, receiving 72.97% of the votes, the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan announced on Tuesday.

The commission added that the voter turnout in the March 12 early presidential elections amounted to 97.17% with nearly 3.4 million citizens participating in the polls.

Nine candidates ran for the presidency, eight of them received from 1.08% to 11,09% of the votes, according to the results announced by the results announced by the Turkmen Central Election Commission.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov was nominated for the highest state post by the Democratic Party of Turkmenistan.
