Turkmenistan has the capacity to reduce its hydrocarbon emissions, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko said on Thursday in Ashgabat during the international scientific conference “Environmental aspects in the production of hydrocarbon resources”.

The event is organized by the Türkmengaz (Turkmen Gas) and Türkmennebit (Turkmen Oil) state concerns, in partnership with the Turkmen Forum and the UK-based GaffneyCline.

It is estimated that methane emissions in Turkmenistan could be reduced by almost 75%, and more than half could be cut without any net cost, the UN Permanent Coordinator in Turkmenistan said.

Dmitry Shlapachenko informed that Turkmenistan proposed to create a Regional Center for Climate Technologies in Central Asia to promote regional cooperation in the field of mitigation and reduction of CO2 emissions and to develop regional cooperation in this direction.

The forum also discusses the prospects for the energy sector, Turkmenistan's role in ensuring energy security in the region, the role of financial institutions in supporting sustainable energy, innovative technologies in the field of hydrocarbon production and reducing gas emissions, as well as know-how, international cooperation in processing and transportation of hydrocarbons.
