Turkmen President Proposes New Transport Initiatives For Landlocked Countries
President Berdimuhamedov suggested creating a special working group under the auspices of the UN to defend the interests of landlocked countries in the transport sphere

President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov in his video address to the Ministerial Transport Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries that opened on Monday in the country’s Avaza National Tourist Zone proposed new international initiatives in the transport sphere for landlocked countries.

The Head of Turkmenistan suggested creating a special working group under the auspices of the United Nations. Its task would be to defend the interests of landlocked countries in the transport sphere and introduce this activity into the system of work of the relevant UN structures, the official Turkmen media reports.

President Berdimuhamedov also proposed to develop a resolution of the UN General Assembly on increasing the role of landlocked developing countries in the development of global transport cooperation.

"We consider it timely to start working on a UN General Assembly resolution on increasing the role of landlocked developing countries in developing and strengthening global transport cooperation," Serdar Berdimuhamedov said.

The Head of State added that "such a document can give a meaningful impetus to the promotion of the interests of states, indicate the importance and understanding of the relevant problems, the commitment of the world community to address them."

"Turkmenistan is ready to start preparing a document open for all constructive suggestions and recommendations," President Berdimuhamedov stressed.

The forum, organized on the initiative of Turkmenistan under the aegis of the UN, gathered delegations from around 40 states and more than 30 international organizations.
