Turkmenistan has increased its electricity exports by 30 percent year-on-year in 2022, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its Electricity Market Report 2023, published last week.
In comparison with 2021, Turkmenistan has increased its electricity production by 11 percent over the past year.
The report noted that such a significant increase in exports was due to an increase in production at a large gas-fired power plant complex in the country’s southeast province Mary.
According to the IEA, Turkmenistan began exporting electricity to Kyrgyzstan in August 2021, while increasing these supplies to 1.7 terawatt-hours (TWh) in the first half of 2022.
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have agreed to increase electricity supplies to 4 TWh/year in October 2022, which could increase the security of electricity supply in Uzbekistan, according to the report.
Established in 1974, the IEA is a Paris-based autonomous intergovernmental organization and includes 30 member states. The IEA aims to promote energy security amongst its member countries and beyond.
