Turkmenistan pays special attention to reducing its methane emissions, the Deputy Chairman of the Government of the country Serdar Berdimuhamedov said during his speech at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow.
Speaking at the COP26, the Vice-Premier stressed that following the adoption of the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Turkmenistan is actively working to achieve them domestically and internationally, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in its Wednesday press release.
In order to achieve the goals on the climate agenda, the country pays special attention to reducing methane emissions, Berdimuhamedov said, adding that the Turkmen side welcomes the Global Methane Pledge and expresses interest in studying it for the possible participation.
Berdimuhamedov also informed about Turkmenistan's ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in key sectors of the economy, saying the introduction of modern technologies in all spheres of the state economy resulted in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The Vice-Premier stressed that the country is improving the national legal framework and making a significant contribution to achieving climate neutrality. The country adopted the National Strategy on Climate Change, the National Strategy for the Development of Renewable Energy until 2030 and the new Law of Turkmenistan on Renewable Energy Sources.
"Turkmenistan, both at the expense of its own financial resources and with the technical and financial support from international organizations and financial institutions, in the medium term plans to achieve zero growth of greenhouse emissions, starting in 2030, and in the long term - annual significant reductions in emissions," Berdimuhamedov said.
COP26 kicked off on Sunday in Glasgow and will last two weeks. It brings together heads of state and government from more than 120 countries to discuss and agree on joint steps to counter global warming.
