Uzbekistan's incumbent president Shavkat Mirziyoyev won the early presidential election with 87.5 percent of the vote, Interfax reported on Monday, citing a statement by the head of the Central Election Commission, Zayniddin Nizamkhojaev.

Article 35 of the law "On the Election of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan" entitles Mirziyoyev to be considered the elected head of state.

Mirziyoyev was elected in a snap election in December 2016 after the death of the first Head of state, Islam Karimov, who had led the country since 1989.

In October 2021, Mirziyoyev won a new election with 80.12% of the vote. In April 2021, Uzbekistan held a referendum on constitutional changes, including the extension of the Uzbek president's term from five to seven years, and the proposed changes were supported by 90.2% of voters.

In early May, Mirziyoyev, based on the constitutional changes, signed a decree to hold early presidential elections.
