On Monday, a Turkmen delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov, met with UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Li Junhua in New York. The meeting emphasized the productive multilateral cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, according to the Turkmen Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Turkmen representatives highlighted their government's active support and participation in the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, both nationally and internationally. A national monitoring system and annual reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the government have been established in Turkmenistan to facilitate this effort.
The two parties also discussed the importance of the "UN Friendship Games" resolution, initiated by Turkmenistan, and outlined joint actions for its implementation. Another key topic was Turkmenistan’s participation in the "Summit of the Future," scheduled for September 22-23, 2024, at the UN headquarters in New York, where Turkmenistan will chair one of the summit’s sessions.
Additionally, the delegates reviewed joint initiatives such as consultations for developing a Transport Resilience Atlas as part of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035) and the upcoming international UN expert meeting on energy connectivity, set to take place in Ashgabat in October.
On September 28, 2024, Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, also met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
