Kazakhstan is exploring the possibility of importing natural gas from Turkmenistan, according to a report on Wednesday from the Agency of Transport and Communications under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan.

Kazakhstan’s national gas company, QazaqGaz, clarified that supply volumes would be determined based on commercial and technical terms.

The cooperation between Kazakhstan and the State Concern Turkmengaz involves several initiatives, including discussions on prospective sites for joint geological exploration. Implementing these projects would require signing investment agreements.

Currently, Kazakhstan primarily meets its domestic gas demand through local sources, resorting to imports only during peak consumption periods. QazaqGaz head Sanzhar Zharkeshov noted that the country’s gas consumption could double over the next 10 to 15 years.

Previously, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan signed a cooperation agreement in the gas sector.
