Since 2018, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been working with Turkmenistan to modernize its power infrastructure. The ADB’s $500 million National Power Grid Development Strategy project is the first initiative by an international financial institution in the country’s power sector, the bank said Monday.
Under the project, about 1,400 kilometers of 110, 220, and 500 kV transmission lines and 11 substations have been constructed in Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, and Lebap provinces, as well as in Ashgabat.
The project has already delivered tangible results: electricity exports increased from 3.4 terawatt-hours in 2017 to 9.3 terawatt-hours in 2023. Technical assistance of $1.5 million was provided through a grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific (JFPR).
The project partner, Turkmenenergo State Power Corporation, contributed $175 million.
