The development of tourist rail routes to Turkmenistan has significant potential, First Deputy Director General of Russian Railways Sergei Pavlov said on the sidelines of the 84th meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the Commonwealth of Independent States member states held in Ashgabat.

Pavlov emphasized that Turkmenistan occupies an important position at the crossroads of historic routes linking North and South, as well as East and West, TASS reported on Thursday.

The Russian Railways executive noted that the combination of rich historical heritage and rapidly developing modern infrastructure creates broad opportunities for tourism, which, according to Pavlov, the Russian and Turkmen sides should fully utilize.

The 84th meeting of the Council for Railway Transport of the CIS member states was held in Ashgabat on May 13–14 as part of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the organization.
