Construction of a 106-kilometer section of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline has been completed in Afghanistan's Herat province, Afghanistan's state-news agency Bakhtar reported on Wednesday, citing the country's Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.
According to the report, 127 kilometers of the project's 153-kilometer route in Afghanistan have been prepared for construction and 36 kilometers have been backfilled
Bakhtar reported that the TAPI pipeline will transport natural gas from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. Once fully operational, the project is expected to provide affordable natural gas to Afghan consumers and generate about $500 million in annual revenue for Afghanistan from transit services.
The TAPI project, initiated by Turkmenistan, is one of the region's major energy infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening regional energy cooperation and expanding economic ties.
