The Garagum livestock farm in the Halach district of Lebap velayat keeps 58,000 small ruminants, including 27,000 sheep, the newspaper Neutral Turkmenistan reported on Monday.
The farm breeds Karakul and Saraja sheep breeds, which are well adapted to arid climate conditions. Karakul sheep make up the majority of the country’s flock, while Saraja sheep are valued for their long white wool used in carpet making.
To provide feed for the animals, Garagum annually prepares more than 2,000 tons of hay from grasses, fodder crops, compound feed and concentrated mixtures. The farm has dozens of sheepfolds where animals are kept during grazing periods, wintering, lambing campaigns and the early months of raising lambs.
Farm specialists focus on preserving pasture areas and monitoring feed resources. Grazing is organized around more than 100 wells, 50 of which provide the farm with quality drinking water. Experienced shepherd teams oversee the condition of water sources, pastures and animal health through feeding, care and veterinary treatment.
