Central Asian countries approved the development of a plan to introduce an automated water resources accounting system in the Syr Darya River basin at the 94th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination in Central Asia (ICWC) in Turkistan, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported on Friday.
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma, Turkmenistan’s Chairman of the State Committee for Water Management Durdy Gendjiev, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Water Resources Shavkat Khamraev, as well as Turkistan Region Akim Nuralhan Kusherov and Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan Yeraly Tugzhanov. Attended the meeting, Kyrgyzstan participated in the meeting as an observer.
Participants reviewed water limits and reservoir operating regimes in the Syr Darya and Amu Darya river basins for the 2026 growing season, as well as preparations for a plan to introduce an automated water accounting system in the Syr Darya basin. The development of the document was approved and a special working group is planned to be formed by September this year.
The sides also discussed implementation of the regional cooperation grant project with the World Bank to improve water resource efficiency among Central Asian countries (CAWEC), as well as the implementation of tasks arising from decisions of the Council of Heads of State — founders of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea.
According to the statement, the next, 95th meeting of the Interstate Commission for Water Coordination in Central Asia will be held in Turkmenistan.
