Scientists from Turkmenistan’s National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna and representatives of the country’s Ministry of Environmental Protection participated in a training seminar in the Chinese city of Yinchuan, where they exchanged experience with Chinese colleagues on combating desertification, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Monday.
During the event, Chinese scientists working in ecology, forestry and agriculture gave thematic presentations. Turkmen specialists, in turn, presented national experience and recent scientific developments and provided their Chinese colleagues with copies of specialized publications.
The seminar participants learned about China’s efforts to restore desertified land, establish forest-pasture areas, grow plants in desert conditions and use solar energy for irrigation.
The event also included discussions on an initiative put forward by the President of Turkmenistan at the 80th session of the U.N. General Assembly to establish a Regional Center for Combating Desertification for Central Asia. The Chinese side expressed interest in further expanding cooperation with Turkmenistan’s National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna.
Participants emphasized the importance of sharing experience and scientific knowledge in protecting the environment of arid regions and expressed confidence in further developing Turkmen-Chinese cooperation in this area.
