Spain celebrates its National Day on Oct. 12 each year. The date commemorates 1492, when Christopher Columbus’ expedition reached the Americas, marking the beginning of the spread of Spanish language and culture around the world. The holiday was established in 1918 under King Alfonso XIII. Celebrations include a military parade and ceremonies attended by the king and senior officials.
