Turkmengaz State Concern received equipment for detecting methane emissions under the European Union’s Green Development in Turkmenistan project, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). The handover ceremony took place Oct. 19 at the state concern’s Natural Gas Research Institute, the THP reported.

The equipment includes a portable optical gas imaging (OGI) camera made by Spanish company SENSIA Solutions. It uses infrared technology to detect gas emissions, including methane, in real time. The equipment was handed over as part of efforts to introduce a leak detection and repair (LDAR) system. Specialists from Turkmengaz are also receiving practical training in operating the equipment and applying LDAR technologies, including laser scanners and thermal imaging cameras.

German Ambassador to Turkmenistan Petra Dachtler, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkmenistan Maciej Madaliński and institute director Bayrammyrat Pirniyazov attended the ceremony. Representatives of the parties formalized the equipment handover by signing a corresponding protocol, according to the THP.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dachtler highlighted the importance of reducing methane emissions from oil and gas production to protect the climate. Turkmenistan is a participant in the Paris Agreement and the Global Methane Pledge, an initiative aimed at reducing emissions of this greenhouse gas.
