Farmers in Turkmenistan’s Dashoguz region are growing winter garlic on 780 hectares this year and expect to harvest at least 8 metric tons per hectare, the Golden Age electronic newspaper reported.
The largest areas allocated to garlic cultivation are in S.Turkmenbashy district, with 150 hectares, and Garashsyzlyk district, with 140 hectares.
In recent years, farmers in the region have gained experience in growing garlic suited to local climatic conditions. Selecting high-yielding, disease-resistant varieties adapted to the region and carrying out the necessary agricultural activities on time have helped them achieve good results.
Locally grown garlic is popular among residents of the region for its taste and long shelf life, according to the report. The region has specialized facilities for storing the harvest, including modern cold-storage facilities built in recent years.
