Construction of the Kerki-Kabul power line section from the Dasht-e Alwan substation to the Arghandi substation in Kabul province is scheduled for completion in June 2027, Myrat Artykov, Director of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) power line project, announced this during a plenary session of the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2026 (OGT 2026) international conference, held in Ashgabat on Oct. 21-23.
According to Artykov, construction of the 500-kilovolt Sheberghan-Dasht-e Alwan section is expected to be completed in the coming months. The power line is 711 kilometers long. The next stage of the project involves building the section from the Dasht-e Alwan substation to the Argandi substation in Kabul province.
Once operational, the power line will increase electricity supplies from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan. According to Artykov, after the entire project is commissioned, Turkmenistan will be able to supply Afghanistan with up to 800 megawatts of electricity, helping meet the needs of consumers in Kabul.
More than 50 documents have been signed to date between the participating countries and investors as part of the TAP project. A roadmap between Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Energy and Afghanistan’s Ministry of Energy and Water is expected to be signed soon to facilitate the continuation of construction work in Afghanistan.
