Turkmenistan has supplied more than 477 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China through the Turkmenistan-China gas pipeline, which has been operating since December 2009. The figure is as of Oct. 1, Makсат Babayev, State Minister and Ç hairman of the State Concern Turkmengas, reported during a plenary session of the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan 2026 (OGT 2026) international conference in Ashgabat.

China remains the largest importer of Turkmen natural gas. According to Babayev, long-term agreements, backed by infrastructure and the fulfillment of commitments, provide a reliable foundation for cooperation. He added that Turkmengas highly values its longstanding cooperation with Chinese partners and intends to further develop these ties.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is a partner in the fourth phase of development of the Galkynysh gas field. The launch ceremony for the project took place on April 17. The phase includes drilling production wells and building a gas processing facility with an annual capacity of 10 billion cubic meters of marketable gas. More than 1,000 jobs are expected to be created upon completion.

Galkynysh is one of the world’s largest gas fields. According to an assessment by independent auditor Gaffney, Cline & Associates, a British company, gas reserves at Galkynysh, together with the Garakol and Yashlar structures, total 27.4 trillion cubic meters. The first phase of the field, commissioned in 2013, has a designed annual capacity of 30 billion cubic meters.
